INTRO: Jean Coutu Group (PJC) inc. is one of the most trusted names in Canadian pharmacy retailing. The Corporation operates a network of 417 franchised stores located in the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario under the banners of PJC Jean Coutu, PJC Clinique, PJC Santé, Pro Doc, and PJC Santé Beauté, employing close to 20,000 people.

The Jean Coutu Group consolidated its many activities onto one site of almost 2 million square feet bordering Highway 30 in Varennes. The new headquarters and distribution centre total 883,000 sq.ft. which is 50% larger than the space previously occupied in 2 buildings located in the Longueuil Industrial Park.

LOCATION: Varennes, Quebec

AREA: 245,800 Sq. Ft.

COMPLETION DATE: February 2015.

CHALLENGES: The building is to be a place that encourages communication and discussion. Everyone should have access to a view of the outdoors. The new structure is to be accented by green spaces, outdoor parking, a patio, daycare centre and a fitness room for the wellbeing of the employees.

“It is with great deal of enthusiasm that we undertake the construction of our new headquarters. The facilities in Varennes will be at the cutting edge of technology, guaranteeing high standards of productivity while ensuring an enjoyable and safe work environment for our employees” highlighted François J. Coutu, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jean Coutu Group.

SPATIUM was appointed to create and plan the head office workplace. The architect (GKC) took into consideration our recommendations and our plans in order to create a building that superbly fuses architecture and interior design.

SOLUTION: A2DESIGN focused on employee well-being by creating an environment bathed in natural light, with views of the outdoors and convenient meeting spaces such as the atrium.
