Grenadier House

Designed by: Altius Architecture Inc

Grenadier House is a healthy dwelling that can be proudly used as a model for sustainable and contemporary residential design. The clients for Grenadier Househave asked for specific key features which influenced our design. An integral  garage was incorporated in order to reduce the lengthy driveway, and eliminate  the need for a parking space at rear of the house. This allowed for the backyard
space to be optimized and more useable.

The dwelling accommodates a double car port and a garage below the main living
quarters. The garage creates a split level concept, with four stories at the back of
the house and three at the front. The main living space is slightly elevated above
street level, allowing sun into the south facing facade while maintaining privacy
within the dwelling. The top floor master suite overlooks the rooftop patio half a
story below while maximizing on desired solar gain.

The clients have asked for a modern aesthetic, which is apparent in most of our
projects as we are typically hired for our contemporary architecture designs. A key
feature in the Grenadier House is the atrium style staircase which brings light in as
well as some key architectural features and materials: wood, brick, and metal.

The interior of Grenadier House uses a contemporary and warm palette of altering
wood species, slate, and white solid surfaces. The varying materials and textures
give this house a clean yet unique feeling. The white feature wall in the dining
room is an example of playing with texture to break away from austerity. The main
element in Grenadier House is the cantilevered wood staircase giving the dwelling
an open feeling and allowing light from the top floor to penetrate down to the
bottom. Close attention to detail was paid throughout the entire project from how
one material meets another to the alignment of millwork, fixture placement and
lighting design.
